Dive Into the Science of Pearls

Pearls are some of the most mysterious, alluring, and revered gemstones in the world. Yet the story of their formation is quite bizarre! Organic in origin, pearls form in oysters when a foreign particle, parasite or broken shell enters in. The oyster produces secretions to coat the particle, thereby protecting itself from the irritation. Over a matter of months to years, the secretion forms a pearl, and a glowing gem is born.
